HOLLYWOOD(Hollywood Today)3/1/14/–Robert Whitman is one of fashion’s outstanding photographers.
Originally from Minneapolis where he was the top photographer for Dayton’s department stores (which later became Target). Whitman moved to NYC in 1984 and has never looked back—until now!
Whitman recently asked his agent to look through his 40 year photo archive and see what he could find that would be cool for a retrospective. Whitman also said to his agent ‘oh yeh I believe there are some pictures somewhere in there of Prince’.
Oh Yeh! Prince in 1977 just before he became an international superstar. The pictures are simply incredible. The opening night of the exhibit was extraordinary with many entertainment industry people in attendance including Amos Lee, Wah Wah Watson, Vince Wilburn, Rahkua Ishakarah, Owen Husney (Prince’s manager who got him his first record deal), and Stephen E. Rivkin the wonderful film editor for Avatar, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
The following day I invited Whitman to my studio in Hollywood and we had fun reminiscing about the old days and of course we took pictures of each other. I should mention that many years ago I hired Whitman to do my photo (see below).
Robert Whitman’s photos of Prince from the 3 sessions he shot in 1977 are on exhibit and for sale at Mr. Musichead gallery 7517 W. Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90046 through March 7, 2014 www.mrmusichead.com
