Los Angeles, CA(Hollywood Today)12/5/13/–Tony Hawk was very proud of the work he and his musician friends, particularly Ben Harper, have done to raise funds for skateparks across that nation. The financing of these parks has come from various places including of course from Tony Hawk.  An exciting component are the funds raised by auctioning skateboards signed by the likes of Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and others. Last year this effort raised $126,000. This year skateboarder and musician pairings include:

Today’s press conference began with a great documentary about the skateparks built in Detroit. The parks have helped rebuild the community and diverted kids from crime to skateboarding.  Last year Paul McCartney participated which Tony dreamed of but couldn’t believe when it came true. Also last year the board signed by Bob Dylan sold for more then any other. This year Tony was excited to do a board with Mick Jones and Paul Simonon because Tony is such a huge fan of The Clash.  Jay Z,  and Ozzy were mentioned as hopefuls for the future.

I spoke to both Tony and Ben today and Tony said how pleased he was with the skateboarders and musicians who signed up and how the process moves lightening fast. One of the skateboards was delivered to him only this morning and he signed it at his home in San Diego and brought it here for the E-bay auction. Ben spoke about how big of a project it is to get each skateboarder/musician paired and then getting the boards actually signed. Ben and I also shared insights on some of the music venues we love: The Troubadour, The Orpheum, The El Rey and back in Minneapolis First Ave and the 7th St. Entry.
