50th-story-logo           By Geoffrey Maingart West Hollywood, CA(Hollywood Today)2/9/13—It is amazing that I have been a musician living in LA for years and had never heard of the unique sanctuary that is the Sunset Marquis Hotel & Villas which is celebrating their 50th Anniversary. The event on February 7th at the location and opening of the new Morrison Gallery in the entrance of the hotel was for the photography of some of the great artists of the lens including Timothy White (who is also the curator for all of the photography in the hotel), Julian Lennon, Neal Preston and Henry Diltz. Richard Horowitz Morrison Hotel Gallery, Julian Lennon, Henry Diltz, Timothy White Curator/Photographers Richard Horowitz, Peter Blachley Morrison Hotel Gallery, Julian Lennon, Henry Diltz, Timothy White Curator/Photographers and Rod Gruendyke – General Manager of the Sunset Marquis George Rosenthal created the hotel in 1963 with Hugh Heffner as a hotel for the guests of the Playboy Club that was just up the block and the room rates at the time were $8.  Rock stars and celebrities then had a refuge to live and hang out while in town.  Gradually buying the properties up the hill in the expansion added 40 villas to the residence.  The hotel now has 152 suites and 52 villas in 11 buildings.  At night it is wonderful to take a stroll up the trickle light path.  Every villa and room has a history.  If only the walls could speak.  From some guests diving into the pool from the roof, to infamous parties and some scandalous moments, the Marquis is part of the history of Hollywood. A tour of the hotel with Managing Director, Christopher Cope and Stephanie Senter, head of Public and Media Relations was enlightening to say the least.  Christopher spoke of a haunting experience he had with one of the resident ghosts.  The hotel is a hidden marvel of most of the musical and entertainment legends of the last 50 years.  In the early 1960’s it was the place to be if you were an up and coming rock star or even rock and roll legend.  Once through the entrance you arrive in a secluded artistic atmosphere where anything goes and artistic inspiration abounds.    So many great collaborations came about as a result of accidental meetings at this Zen-like recluse.  The hotel also has a world class recording studio, Nightbird, in the basement that has hosted many of the greats from Elton John to Ozzy to Lennon and Steven Tyler to name a few.

The history of the hotel includes wild parties, haunted villas, famous openings, sad artist histories, and mostly a laid back get together for artists to meet without the media harassments and distractions of Hollywood.  The hotel has two pools, a beautiful restaurant called “Restaurant”, an infamous bar once know as the Whiskey and now Bar 1200, a world class spa and beautiful garden surroundings on five acres hidden just below the Sunset Strip. IMG_0509-1           Each suite or villa is uniquely designed and different.  The service is world class.  It is less a hotel and more a small village of artists in the heart of the Strip.  The restaurant boasts a class menu and sits in the middle of the villas with an open deck and view of the gardens and fishpond.  There is a small bar at the entrance to the restaurant and provides a great place to just hang out at events.  One feels like they are in Italy, Spain or Greece with the Mediterranean design.

The evening at the hotel was the setting for a great Hollywood party for the opening of the new West coast Morrison Gallery.  Among the guests that night were of course the dedicated photographers being exhibited mentioned above and many film and television celebrities including Harrison Ford, Billy Bob Thornton, Gary Oldman, Kenny Aronoff, Appolonia and Avant-garde filmmaker Casey Kehoe and his wife chef Qihuan among the hundreds who attended.  The hotel provided drinks and fabulous appetizers for crowd.  The service was fabulous.  The photography exhibited both in the gallery and throughout the hotel is magnificent and dedicated to the musical greats of the last 50 years.  One shot by Julian Lennon looking up at an introspective Bono from the floor is very special.  It is a great collection and worth making the trip to the hotel for a viewing of the collection alone.

 More Information on Sunset Marquis

Sunset Marquis has been an inner sanctum for rock and roll musicians and Hollywood players looking to disappear into the abyss for a spell, since 1963. Located just off the famed Sunset Strip, the hotel has maintained a Zen-like design with a rock-and-roll spirit all throughout the years. Completed in 2009, the property underwent a $30 million dollar renovation and expansion including the introduction of 40 private Mediterranean-style Villas, 3200 square foot Presidential Villa, 2 pools, SPA, and indoor/outdoor RESTAURANT. In spring 2013, the all-suites main building will boast a complete redesign and fitness center. Photography: John Rowlands Photography: Fredwill Hernandez IMG_0534-1IMG_0512
