The musician who picked up a bat during the same time he was learning to play the guitar, and who attended Escuela Libre De Musica (School of Free Music High School Academy) in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, has released two albums, including 2003’s “The Journey Within,” which reached number 3 on Billboard’s contemporary jazz charts and his second album “Moving Forward,” which received a 2009 Latin Grammy nomination in the “Best Instrumental Album” category has partnered with the NAMM Foundation and NAMM in order to bring awareness and advocate for music programs and arts in the schools.
“When funding is cut in the schools, the first thing they want gone is the music and the arts programs,” said Williams. “This is something dear to my heart, and what better partner than the NAMM Foundation and the NAMM Show to come speak and bring awareness. I will continue to fight, raise money and bring awareness, and partner and fund foundations and non-profit organizations who promote music and the arts, for I believe as it was in my case, that children exposed to music and the arts will become well rounded adults and individuals, for they go hand in hand.”
NAMM President and CEO elaborated on how the partnership between NAMM and Mr. Williams came about. “I felt it was important to contact Mr. Williams after reading his book Rhythms of the Game: The Link Between Musical and Athletic Performance,” said Lamond. “Bernie’s passion for music and dedication is in line with NAMM and the NAMM Foundation’s mission to promote and advocate music and the arts in schools, and what better musician, mentor and inspiration than Bernie.”
