Los Angeles, CA (Hollywood Today) 1/17/2013 – “I think part of the fun of the show is everybody trying to figure out who “A” is, and I think they like not knowing. I think it’s juicy and fun,” Pretty Little Liars executive producer Marlene King said last week during the TCA Winter Tour. “…there’s more than one person on the “A” Team, and so giving little bits and pieces of the puzzle up to you along the way seems to be enough to satisfy the fans.”
Pretty Little Liars is ABC Family’s hit high school drama that follows the lives of four friends, Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell), and Aria (Lucy Hale) as they attempt to unravel the details surrounding their “mean girl” friend Alison’s disappearance and murder. Threatening to reveal their own secrets is the mysterious “A”, who always seems to be just one step ahead of the girls. At the conclusion of Season 2, audiences were captivated as Mona, once bullied by Alison and now considered popular, was unmasked as “A”, almost taking Spencer out with her.
Season 3 finds the Little Liars feeling much safer now that Mona has been locked up in the Radley Sanatorium, until Alison’s body is stolen from her grave and the girls find Emily at the scene of the crime, unable to remember how she got there. As the haunting texts from “A” begin again, the girls are slowly realizing there’s more to the “A” Team than just Mona. Full of twists and turns, the mid-season finale left viewers distraught when Spencer’s boyfriend Toby (Keegan Allen) was exposed to the audience as another member of the “A” Team.
The intriguing mysteries surrounding these four girls have captivated audiences. Executive producer Marlene King shared, “We got a call the day after the revelation that Toby was on the “A” Team from a mother who asked to speak to the head of television at our office. She said she still had eight 16-year olds in her house from a slumber party…and they were still crying.”
Coming off the heels of its mid-season break and Halloween teaser episode, Pretty Little Liars is gearing up to dig deeper into the betrayal of Toby and his role in the “A” Team. “…when we introduced this person, he [Toby] had an axe to grind and he had a lot of anger towards these girls. So that’s in the present even underneath everything else that’s happened. So his darkness isn’t coming out of nowhere. This is not a betrayal of his character. It’s actually a reminder of where we started, coming full circle,” executive producer Oliver Goldstick told Hollywood Today.
With Mona’s release from the sanatorium and return to school, Goldstick addressed the relationship developing between Mona and Alison’s brother, Jason, who volunteers at Rosewood High School, “…we know that Jason’s been dubious since he arrived in Rosewood. So the fact that Mona has any relationship with him should be alarming, particularly to our ‘Pretty Little Liars,’…because Jason has become someone who’s earned particularly Spencer’s trust. So they will have some alliance. We can’t tell you really right now what it’s about, but it will be an alliance.”
Mystery, death, romance, betrayal, and plot twists keep Pretty Little Liars wonderfully addicting. Viewers have watched a group of frightened girls, bullied by an unknown source grow into confident, no-nonsense young women searching for answers and resolution. Troian Bellisario who plays Spencer Hastings said, “…there are so many mysteries and so many unknowns in Rosewood. We still don’t know fully what happened to Alison the night of her murder…So this season really has been a lot of shocking moments for all of the actors.” You can watch Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family, Tuesdays at 8/7c.
