Hollywood, CA (Hollywood Today) 2013/1/14 – “The Carrie Diaries tells the origin story of one of TV’s most iconic characters, how her family, her friends, and the city she loves shaped her life as a teenager. Before the Manolos, before the Cosmos, this is the story of how Carrie Bradshaw became Carrie Bradshaw. You’ve all seen where Carrie’s journey takes her. This is how that journey begins,” says SVP network communications at the CW Paul Hewitt.
Based on the book by author Candace Bushnell. This is the prequel to Sex and the City. We get to learn how Carrie becomes who she does.
In 1984 Carrie Bradshaw lives in the suburbs with her father, Tom, and younger sister Dorrit. Her mother has just passed away and the whole family is trying to deal with their loss. Carrie feels she needs to be a mother to Dorrit, who is rebelling even more without her mother to help balance her. Her father’s not dealing well with having to raise two teenage girls and is overwhelmed.
Realizing that Carrie needs something to distract her he gets her an internship in Manhattan which gives Carrie the opportunity to discovered New York City and all it has to offer.
Carrie looses sight of what is important family and friends. Mouse who’s sweet and geeky, Maggie self-assured and sarcastic, Walt who’s sensitive and sensible and the new bad boy in school Sebastian. Can Carrie learn to balance home, family and the glamor of New York City?
“This is a coming of age story with the heightened experience of Manhattan, and she will be hiding her age for quite a bit of time with a lot of jokes about good dermatology and fresh faced Carrie Bradshaw,” says executive producer of the Carrie Diaries Amy B. Harris. “Yeah, we’re definitely going to be playing with what age is appropriate to sort of be chasing down this new kind of life. So it’s going to add a lot of drama, hopefully, and fun to the show, especially when it explodes in her face.”
“My whole thing when we first started developing this series was let’s get to know Carrie,” says Harris. “It’s obviously a new actor playing a very iconic role that was so beautifully filled by Sarah Jessica, and I felt like let’s get to know Carrie, see her world really develop, this new world that we’re in. An then, yes, I’ve definitely thought about different ways that we will meet her three other friends, but I really felt like, at least initially, just let people enjoy this new universe, kind of get sucked in, and then hopefully we can have a lot of fun with how they get introduced, and I’ve thought a lot about that.”
“My character is a combination of the books, the script, what I’m bringing to the role, Amy’s vision for the character, and myself,” says actress in the Carrie Diaries AnnaSophia Robb. “And I realized, as we go on, I feel like I’m becoming more like Carrie or Carrie is becoming more like me.”
