London, UK (Hollywood Today) 1/6/2013 – “My character comes in and shakes the whole thing up and says it’s time to change,” says Downton Abbey star Shirley MacLaine. “You can’t live in this bubble of your reality and formality any longer. The world is different. It’s not gunfight at the OK Corral. It’s about a woman who’s coming to discuss the values. I have a reason for being in this, not just to go head to head with Maggie Smith, but the whole idea of these two characters represent total polarities.”
MacLaine’s arrival as Martha Levinson is for the happy occasion the wedding of Lady Mary and Matthew Crowley. MacLaine’s character is as forthright as the British are reserved.
“She has her own Shirley approach to everything it’s so refreshing,” says star Elizabeth McGovern who plays Lady Cora.
“The character really does come in like a kind of small tornado and she kind of rattles the house,” says star Michelle Dockery who plays Lady Mary.
The scenes between MacLaine and Maggie Smith are priceless. Both are Oscar-winning actresses and seeing the two together you understand why.
The separation of below stairs is still just as much in evidence as before. The wit that writer Julian Fellows infuses in the show is still there. This year even more so. You will feel like a member of the family. You learn even more about the characters. As you get to know them more it becomes more poignant as you watch each show.
The third season completed airing in December in the UK, where I got to see the season finale. The Downton Abbey series is as strong or stronger than it was in season two and one. Don’t miss.
Downton Abbey season three premieres in America this Sunday January 6th on PBS and is two hours. The rest of the episodes are one hour and air through January 27th .
