Maintaining professionalism and humanity

Hollywood, CA (Hollywood Today) 10/28/12 – The Season 3 Face-Off finale is coming up on Tuesday night at 9:00! This season, the viewing audience will help decide the winner, who will then be announced on Halloween night.

If you haven’t seen Face Off, it’s a quirky reality competition show on Syfy. It pits special effects make-up artists against one another. What makes this season particularly interesting is how well people get along.

The formula of competition shows seems to always have at least one talented, disruptive person who is either: a diva, only out for number one, and/or a jerk. I understand that it makes for drama and the audience thrives on screaming arguments. This season, the disruptive jerk walked off the show in a huff the first episode.

So, for the rest of the season, the competition seemed to be much more about the artists’ abilities against one another, not their personalities. There did not appear to be any backbiting or catty comments about how horrible other artists’ designs are. There were instead people helping one another with molds that didn’t want to cooperate, or sharing quick techniques that could help designs. Funny enough, the show was still interesting. It became all about the challenges and the makeup, not about what fight is going to erupt in the back room today.

I just want to applaud the contestants this season for maintaining their professionalism and humanity. I hope that this season was successful enough in the ratings to justify encouraging this behavior, rather than manipulating personalities to be at odds to set up fights.

Good luck to the final four contestants!
