Marina del Rey,CA(Hollywood Today)10/19/12/This conference brought together players in the Media, entertainment, technology finance world who are playing  part in investments, mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers over the past few years.

The discussion was about whether the market is another bubble, or laying the groundwork for a new period of hyper-growth?   The panel discussed the methods by which media companies are making 9-10 figure bets in this new arms race and what future holds.  Steve Masur, a Senior Partner at MasurLaw discussed the start up stats; 90% of them fail, 9%  break even and only 1% succeed.

As a result, the job of today’s entrepreneur is to be in the 1% that breaks through.  That’s what investors are looking for in the new funding world – traction (meaning revenue), proven success, a road map to profitability, and a track record of progress along this road.

Also what’s new is how many start-ups there are.  So how do you stand out from the crowd?  Masur said that at MasurLaw, they are working on celebrity deals and brand engagement to help drive traffic, separate yourself from the crowd, and show investors that in addition to new ideas, you have something real.

The VC and strategic investment community has always led the way in recognizing the newest opportunities in the technology and entertainment space. In this era of economic flux, boom and bust, there are as many interpretations of value, opportunity and investment as there are investors and analysts in the industry. In this session, we bring together a number of the formative players in the Media, Entertainment, Technology finance world who have played a part in the investments, mergers, acquisitions and takeovers over the past few years. At the moment there is more money chasing fewer ready resources, but as the market predictably shakes out, how the relationship between the traditional and new media companies settles will create a fascinating foundation for the next step in growth for our industry. Are we building toward another bubble or are we laying the groundwork for a period of hypergrowth in the convergence space? Media companies are making nine and ten figure bets in this new arms race and what the future holds is anyone’s guess.
