TRIBUTE TO ANDY ROONEY

By Brian Zink

Hollywood,CA(Hollywood Today)10/2/11/—Tonight was Rooney’s 1,097th for the “60 minutes” program, his last..  He downplayed and described himself simply, not as a “television personality,” but rather as “a writer who reads what he’s written.” “A writer’s job is to tell the truth,” he said. “I know I’ve been terribly wrong sometimes, but I think I’ve been right more than I’ve been wrong.”

Andrew Aitken “Andy” Rooney (born January 14, 1919) is an American radio and television writer. He is most notable for his weekly broadcast “A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney,” a part of the CBS News program “60 Minutes” from 1978 to 2011. His final regular appearance on 60 Minutes aired October 2, 2011. A full autobiography @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Rooney

Myself and much of our country will miss Andy Rooney …And as of yet CBS has not announced whether it has found a replacement for Rooney, or if the segment will even continue ?

Andy Rooney was the Best of the Best with his cultural essays that brought to the American Audience new meaning and sometimes different a look at our country and us as a people.

Really Television won’t be the same!

Rooney is 92, and over the years “60 minutes” became my Favorite News program. It was the ”60 minutes” worth waiting for …To see his segment at the very end every Sunday. With his wit and opinions and sharp commentary put him beyond the box… CBS chairman Jeff Fager called him an “American original.”

Rooney joined the CBS network in 1949 as a writer for Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts” — an early version of American Idol. He then moved up the ranks at the network, producing specials and hard news features for CBS News, before joining “60 Minutes” when it launched in 1968.

He bridged the generations and brought our differences to the forefront in a balanced way making all our lives a little better. He remembered the milkman and that ice came from the iceman which I only vaguely remember from growing up as part of our everyday life. Having been a WW-II correspondent he flew with our Air Force over War torn Europe giving  us an insight to history in the making. “Like a pickup football team on a Saturday morning, we grew in strength as we flew, until all England seemed to be covered with bombers”

He was also a pioneer of broadcasting and for starters a writer for Arthur Godfrey show,, the biggest variety show of it’s time. “60 Minutes” may be his final act into retirement. But his stage  and audience goes far beyond our present group journalists who have never seen the wars, the politics and human experiences. Being one of the first reporters to see the liberation of WW-II’s concentration camps, as well as the entry of Allied forces into Paris. To now becoming what some say the best cultural essayist of our time.

The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there’s a 90% probability you’ll get it wrong.

People will generally accept facts as truth only if the facts agree with what they already believe.

The average dog is a nicer person than the average person.

The federal government has sponsored research that has produced a tomato that is perfect in every respect, except that you can’t eat it. We should make every effort to make sure this disease, often referred to as ‘progress’, doesn’t spread.

The only people who say worse things about politicians that reporters do are other politicians.

I’ve learned:

That life is like a roll of toilet paper – the closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

That we should be glad God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.

That money doesn’t buy class.

That the Lord didn’t do it all in one day – what makes me think that I can?

That love, not time, heals all wounds.

That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow, he may have to eat them.

That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
