Bernalda, Italy (Hollywood Today) 08/29/11—Filmmaker Sofia Coppola, Academy Award winner and daughter of “Godfather” director Francis Ford Coppola, married Thomas Mars, frontman of French band Phoenix and father of her two children, on Saturday in Italy.
The couple was married in Bernalda, the southern Italian village where Sofia’s great-grandfather was born. The ceremony took place in a garden at a historic palazzo that her famous father renovated, according to the Associated Press. The A.P. also reported it was a simple civil ceremony performed by Mayor Leonardo Chiruzzi.
The ANSA news agency reported guests included American actor Johnny Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Finding Neverland”) and Talia Shire (“Godfather: Part II” and “Rocky”), Sofia’s aunt.
Sofia was previously married to fellow filmmaker Spike Jonze in 1999. The couple separated in 2003 and later divorced.
Sofia Coppola captured serious attention in 1993 when she wrote the screenplay adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ “The Virgin Suicides.” A decade later, she made headlines again when she unveiled the film “Lost in Translation,” which she wrote and directed. At the 2004 Academy Awards, she won for Best Original Screenplay. That year, she was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. Sofia was the third woman (and first American woman) to ever be nominated for an Academy Award in Directing.
