In recognition of ordinary people for doing extraordinary things in an effort to uplift a community, last night, multimedia personality brought his black star power – Steve Harvey and business partner Rushion McDonald brought music and celebrities to the The Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas for the 8th Annual Hoodie Awards and I was there.

Harvey, clearly a man of many talents is the new host of “The Family Feud” feels that it’s not fame or fortune that makes one special but rather what one does to help others. The Awards evening is just a segment of this 3 day event that includes Harvey’s morning radio show, a Midnight Comedy Jam, several more parties with special guest stars and performances, financial and cooking panels and today a Fundraising Golf Tournament.

Locals from the community were honored in a variety of categories from Best Gospel Choir, Best High School and Best High School Teacher to Best Fried Chicken and Best Nail Salon. The Community Leader Award winner received a 2011 Edge from Ford, the Presenting Sponsor.

The O’Jays opened the evening by playing their big hits for the sold out audience. Angie Stone, Sherrie Shaperd, Holly Robinson Peete, Tameka, George Wallace along with other star power entertained throughout the evening. 2004 “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino performed on the heels of a controversial affair and attempted suicide, bringing the audience to their feet for a standing ovation.

Thank you Valerie Milano for reporting on awards that truly have merit. The Emmys are mostly about winning for oneself. The Hoodies are all about winning for others. Long live the Hoodies!
