Naomi Campbell dring testimony

THE HAGUE  (Hollywood Today) 8/9/10 – How in the Hague did supermodel Naomi Campbell and actress Mia Farrow end up facing off in the war crimes trial of Liberian President Charles Taylor?

Diamonds are some girls’ best friend, but not Naomi’s. Yet diamonds are forever for her as the “blood diamond” incident happened 13 years ago, and ended up with her on the stand in the highest World Court.

It appears Naomi accepted some stones from Taylor, allegedly blood diamonds given to the British model by Taylor after a dinner.  Taylor denies the accusation by the prosecutor, as does Campbell.

Only trouble is Campbell apparently could not resist bragging about the diamonds the next day to Mia Farrow and to her own modeling agent, Carole White.

Naomi said in court that she received “dirty looking stones” after a dinner with Mr. Taylor in 1997, but she said they had not been given to her by the former president himself, and she could not be sure if the stones were diamonds.

Farrow told the court that the Campbell told people she had received a “huge diamond” from former Liberian President Taylor.

Farrow told Taylor’s war crimes trial in The Hague Monday that she remembered the supermodel as being “quite excited” about the diamond when she came to breakfast the morning after a 1997 charity dinner in South Africa.

Campbell’s former agent, Carole White, also testified Monday, saying Taylor had promised during the charity dinner to give the model diamonds.

Diamonds are key to the case against Taylor as the prosecution says he supplied weapons to rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone in return for diamonds.

The charity dinner was hosted by former South African President Nelson Mandela to benefit his children’s fund.  Campbell told the court she gave the diamonds to the then-director of the fund, Jeremy Ratcliffe, as a possible donation.

Ratcliffe said he had kept the stones since Campbell gave them to him in 1997, because he did not want to involve the fund in anything illegal.  He handed over the diamonds to South African police after Campbell named him in her testimony.
