The Real L Word, sometimes girls just want to have fun
HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 8/1/2010 – “Episode 7 was pioneering on many levels,” says Showtime The Real L Word star Whitney Mixter. “In terms of nudity, I think all of us had different boundaries. If I’m going to do it, I’m going to go in a hundred percent. I wasn’t going to close the door, whether it was the kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom. With my storyline, you’ll see several sexual situations and some nudity throughout the season, but it definitely increases in the next three episodes.”
The Real L Word, a reality show about lesbians, portrays Mixter as the party girl who likes sex (with girls) and drinking too much. However, such hedonism comes at the cost of waking up later asking, what did I just do? Lesbians don’t get a special pass in the sex and relationships department. The Real L Word was inspired by the fictional series The L Word, which had some criticism of not showing lesbians honestly, of glamorizing and exaggerating that lifestyle. What the reality series shows is that sexual orientation doesn’t change the basic human conditions of love and jealousy.
When you put a group of women together who mostly expect to have everything their own way, you naturally get a lot of drama. You also find much to like and admire about this group of women who’ve chosen to risk being judged harshly by sharing their lives with the world.
“It’s very surreal to look at yourself and relive the past several months of your life condensed down,” says Mixter. “You definitely learn a lot about yourself. I don’t regret anything, but I definitely sometimes cringe at myself and my own actions. It’s such a rare opportunity to be able to tune into your own life that played out over the past couple months that I’m really fortunate to be part of it.”
“In terms of the storytelling, we didn’t plot out how much sexual content was going to be in the show,” says The Real L Word executive producer Jane Lipsitz. “Documenting real people is different than if you’re doing a scripted show. These are real women. We just documented as it happened and it just landed as this particular episode.”
CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler, responded to questions at the Television Critics Association this week regarding CBS receiving a failing grade from GLAAD for its portrayal of gays and lesbians in prime time. “I’m very disappointed with our record and adding characters to diversify our shows.” CBS series to include gay and lesbian characters include The Good Wife and The Surrogate. Showtime, a part of CBS, airs The Real L Word.
“Another trend, that we’re starting to see, in addition to the visibility, is that we’re losing the stereotypes around it,” says The Real L Word star Jill Goldstein. “Which I think, is the most important component. Not only should there be more gays on television, but they don’t have to be so heavy-handed with the stereotypes that surround being gay.”
“It went from having it be gay men could be a comical character and gay women could be a sexualized character,” says Mixter. “I think now you’re seeing a slow but steady shift into actually having them be pertinent characters that are more realistic and dynamic and along an even playing field.”
