HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 12/6/09 — Elbowing its way to the top after two weeks on the sidelines, The Blind Side triumphed over New Moon and all other competitors by scoring an estimated $20.4 million at the nation’s box-office this post-Thanksgiving weekend.

Brothers, the new “not-war” drama featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire drafted a sluggish $9.7 million at 2088 family reunions, B-movie thriller Armored drove off with a lack-lustre $6.6 million at 1915 bank heists,  Everybody’s Fine, the new comedy/drama starring Robert de Niro and Drew Barrymore proved its title wrong by achieving a mere $4 million from 2133 road trips.

Now up to $129 million since it was released two weeks ago, football drama The Blind Side looks like it might turn out to be the Xmas hit those waiting in the wings are praying to be themselves.  For Sandra Bullock, bouncing off the flop of All About Steve, it really has turned out to be a bumper year, proving that with The Proposal already having accounted for $163 million, she’s back and bigger than ever before.

At No. 2, Twilight Saga – New Moon faded by 63.4% to transfuse $15.7 million into a blood bank now standing at a staggering $255 million in the US alone, followed by the slate of new release

Brothers is the American remake of Brodre, Susanne Blier’s highly acclaimed 2004 Danish film.  Directed by Jim Sheridan, he of In the Name of the Father, In America, and My Left Foot, such dour material would seem perfectly suited for him, but reviews were polite if enthusiastic, most drawing attention to the superior original it was based on.  What with Xmas round the corner, shopping to be done and houses to be decorated, only fans of miserablist cinema could be counted on to be lured to something like this.

Dropping by 52.3%, Disney’s A Christmas Carol warbled up $7.5 million at 4 to amass $115 million to date, at 5 Old Dogs plunged 59% for $6.9 million, though the drop was steeper for 2012, self-destructing by 62% to salvage $6.6 million, that’s $148 million in toppling skyscrapers, exploding volcanoes and wrecked marriages so far.

Sharing sixth position, Armored, the new thriller from director Nimrod (Vacancy) Antal and starring Matt Dillion, Jean Reno and Laurence Fishburne let the side down for Screen Gems who usually excel at cheap, unpretensious exploitation movies.  Title is fairly generic, trailer gives away surprises, nothing seemed out of the groove here.

At 8, Ninja Assassin kept leaping around, despite taking a bad tumble of 62.2% and a take of $5 million.  Planet 51 followed with a 57% drop in orbit and $4.3 million, leaving the top ten spot to admit Everybody’s Fine, the remake of Guiseppe (Cinema Paradiso) Tornatore’s 1990 original, Stanno tutti bene.  A starry cast, including Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell, a director, Kirk Jones, much liked for Waking Ned and Nanny McPhee, a sentimental theme – such are the vagaries of ticket-buyers.

Love Sandra Bullock in every movie she’s done, and can’t wait to see Blind Side. A co-worker saw it over the weekend and loved it. Movies based on real life stories and people are very touching to the heart especially this holiday time of year.
