Singer Lisa Hannigan brings Ireland to L.A.

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 11/9/2009 – Since her days of singing with Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan has worked with Herbie Hancock and with Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol. On the road she’s packing Irish-icana, Americana stylin’ from Ireland, songwriter Gavin Glass on guitar. She left the stage to a standing ovation as she closed her show last night in San Francisco with a nod to Depeche Mode, covering Personal Jesus.

Lisa Hannigan has been touring non-stop since the release of her Mercury Prize-nominated debut album last fall. Her cream smoke voice reminds one of walnuts and soft sweaters. Her songs stir you into her tea with genuine warmth from a stone cold beauty. She sings, “Thoughts of you, warm my bones, I’m on the way, I’m on the phone, let’s get lost, me and you, an ocean and a rock is nothing to me.” An ocean and a rock (Ireland) is what separates America from the UK. She goes on to sing, “The bristle of my brush spin you into my curls today, spin you thru a delicate wash, I wear ya all day, I wear ya all day.”

Hannigan plays oddball instruments and along with the grand instrumentation of the band, draws out a gypsy sound that gives the whole set mysticism, a mysticism brought upon by the tinkling of the glockenspiel, harmonium and dulcimer. Although all her songs have this caring feel, her first solo album Sea Sew isn’t about romantic love at all. It’s an atmospheric record perfect for the log cabin when it’s all snow outside and you feel like cleaning but keep breaking to rock, sway and spin to the rhythms and crooning. Her album Sea Sew is available at Amazon and iTunes.

Lisa Hannigan serves you pie her mom made, and tells you to have more. Bring your hearts.
