Dylan and Petty classic
HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 10/16/09 –It’s not the camera it’s the photographer. It’s been 23 years since my photo of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty appeared in Rolling Stone magazine. That was shot with my Nikon film camera. Remember film? But my trusty Motorola ZN5 cell phone came in handy when I attended the Bob Dylan concert on 10-13-09 at the Hollywood Palladium. It was a general admission show so I just bought a ticket, got there early and got a good position standing about 10 feet in front of the stage. The show opened with a great set by Johnny Rivers who I have had the pleasure of seeing and photographing all the way back to the 1980s. Johnny ended his set by saying “next up Bob Dylan.”
Bob and his band hit the stage about 9:30 pm. They put on a great show which included Shooting Star, Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right, Highway 61 Revisited, Like a Rolling Stone and All Along the Watchtower. Bob spoke only twice during the show. Once to thank the audience for coming and once to introduce his band which includes Charlie Sexton on lead guitar, Tony Garnier on bass, George Recile on drums, Stu Kimball on guitar and Donnie Herron on Pedal Steel.
Bob spent much of the show playing keyboards but also played guitar and harmonica on several songs. Bob appeared to really enjoy the evening, smiling repeatedly throughout the show and exchanging occasional humorous glances towards his bandmates in particular Garnier whose been Bob’s bassist for 20 years.
On Tuesday night outside the Hollywood Palladium A Hard Rain was a-Fallin but inside it felt likeSummer Days.

I just love your article and photo. I love Bob Dylan and when I saw him this summer he was so animated and seemed so happy. I hope he really is for he looked as though he was having a great time. Thanks for the article.

Saw Bob at Edinburgh in May of this year and he was so involved and energised, seemed like he was having a real good time. I would be my dream to see him from ten feet away tho! Lucky you!

Thanks for the charming review of the show! Wish I could have been there. Great classic pic of Dylan and Petty. Do you have any pics from the Palladium? Would love to see them too.

The Dylan reviews have all been good and with Johnny Rivers opening the show must have been fabulous. I’m a big fan of both, however little is said about JR’s performance; could you please elaborate? You wouldn’t happen to have pics of JR too would you?
