HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 8/1/09 – Surprises and faves are in store for Emmys 2009 as 30 Rock’s leading 22 noms are a given while Drew Barrymore’s unusual Grey Gardens with 17 was an eyebrow-raiser.
The Emmys have been accused in the past of nominating the same shows each year, but consider that you have your own favorite shows to watch, so it is not illogical.
For instance Madmen with 16 nominations is not surprising, yet Into The Storm with 14 kudos and especially Saturday Night Live with 13 are head-turners. SNL hasn’t scored those kind of numbers since its heyday. And Generation Kill and Little Dorrit both got 11 noms.
Steve Carell, Alec Baldwin and Charlie Sheen are among top comedy nominees (see related story). Amongst the fems Mary Louise Parker and even Sarah Silverman and past Tina Fey are up. Hugh Laurie is on call for top drama as is John Hamm for Madmen. Among the Actresses up for the little but important golden statuette are Sally Field and Glenn Close. All this and more about your favorite actors and actresses in related piece.
The Office got only nine kudos this year, a tad low for what is usually the favorite. That is behind the 10 for this year’s Academy Awards, Dancing with the Stars and again surprisingly Taking Chance.
The six nomination area had some unusual activity as college crowd-led Flight of the Conchords was included as were two shows that might have done more: Weeds and 24.
Past toppers The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Pushing Daisies were among the many in the five nom arena.
Brothers and Sisters and Friday Night Lights only got one nomination, up there with Carnegie Hall opening night. The first two need to practice, practice, practice to get into multiple nom halls where they belong.
All told it was a diverse and satisfying list. While the winners may ultimately be the same as in the past, t least they are up against some young talent.
