Suleman breaks her silence in NBC TV interview to air February 9th, says she had so many children because she “longed for connections”

By Gayl Murphy

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 2/7/09 – Citing feelings of “powerlessness” as a child, the idea of just eight was never enough for Nadya Suleman.

The Bellflower, California, single mother said in her first interview that she had used in vitro-fertilization to have all of her children and that she used the same donor for all. Now famous as the mother of octuplets, six boys and two girls, her total number of offspring is 14, all under the age of eight.

Suleman still remains hospitalized at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, where the delivery occurred on January 28th using forty-six hospital staff and four delivery rooms. Presumably, NBC News Ann Curry interviewed Suleman there.

ANN CURRY: How did an only child end up with 14 children?

NADYA SULEMAN: That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family. I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that I really lacked, I believe, growing up.

CURRY: Describe what you felt you lacked within.

SULEMAN: Feeling of self and identity. I didn’t feel as though, when I was a child, I had much control of my environment. I felt powerless. And that gave me a sense of predictability. Reflecting back on my childhood, I know it wasn’t functional. It was pretty dysfunctional, and whose isn’t?

CURRY: So, the first time when you tried to become pregnant, you actually had tried how many times before you were successful?

SULEMAN: Oh, boy. Well, I went through about seven years of trying. Through artificial insemination. Through medication. All of which was unsuccessful. And then the first IVF procedure from that facility was successful. And, then I just kept going in.

The rest of the one-on-one interview will air on Today, on Monday, February 9 and on Dateline on Tuesday February 10 at 10 p.m.

I am betting that the next few weeks revelations will be about how this woman has an obsession with Angelina Jolie. And has acted accordingly.

She has not only groomed herself- that hair, nose and lips aren’t coincidental- it took me only as long as a where I have seen that before frown to realize she was mimicking Jolie’s mannerisms.

She has them down surprisingly well. But, as all amateurs always do, it washes out in the finish. She ends up sounding like her very crazy self, chastising working women as being selfish for leaving their children when they are the same taxpayers that will be supporting your litter of 14 is not a smart move.

I feel sorry for the children of this irresponsible and extremely selfish woman. They did not ask for this. Having said that, I do not think society should reward this woman with publicity, money, and praise. People should start taking responsibility for their actions. People should also start learning that life is a precious gift, not a plaything or a commodity. I hope this incident shines the harsh light of scrutiny on the fertility industry and the kind of mindset it supports.

Nadya Suleman went on workers compensation disability back in 1999 (at age 23) due to a work-related back injury (in which she filed 2 different workers compensation claims, one of which netted her $168,000). For the past 10 years though she’s been receiving disability payments and unable to work, she’s been able to undergo several IVF treatments and have 14 children. Since disability payments generally aren’t counted as income (or taxed), she’s also likely been able to receive welfare for each of her 6 children.

This woman has been living off the system for most of her adult life and will continue to do so at taxpayer’s expense.

“Octuplets Mom Got $168G In Disability”-CBS News

The mother of newborn octuplets and six other children collected almost $168,000 in state disability payments for an on-the-job back injury that she and a doctor said was worsened by pregnancy, according to state documents released Thursday.

Nadya Suleman, 33, became pregnant with all 14 of her children after a 1999 injury during a riot at a state mental hospital where she worked, state Division of Workers’ Compensation documents show.

She stopped working, but had the six older children during that time, notes Early Show correspondent Hattie Kauffman.

“There has to be some question,” says CBS News Legal Analyst Trent Copeland, “about whether or not a woman who’s disabled and collecting over $150,000 worth of disability payments is really authorized to receive those payments if she’s too disabled to work, but not too disabled to have at least a half-dozen children.”

i watched dateline tuesday night, and what her response to discarding the remainder of the embryos’ reminded me of some of my last calls at the bars, and that was, ‘you will never take my last beer.’ i feel that she will not be the poster child for anti-abortion.in fact,i think that will backfire on her behalf. thank-you for letting me vent.
