From Bush to Slater, this promises a few laughs and real hits

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 1/30/09 — The Super Bowl does not need to be the boring defensive battle it usually is. Pitt Reggie Bush against Khloe Kardashian and see whose asses get kicked. I put my money on Khloe and fellow linesman and Gossip Girl Penn Badgley and Blake Lively, if you give me points.
DirectTV is staking its own claim on the Super Bowl, as it has been doing on much of TV and Internet-delivered programming.

DirectTV, still not rich enough to buy the whole billion-dollar Super Bowl XLIII broadcast which will feature the the cool hand luke’s Kurt Warner of the Arizona Cardinals against the newly re-furbished Steel Curtain of the the Pittsburgh Steelers, yet with a little ingenuity DirectTV is working there working their way to that $3 million per 30-second spot that the Super Bowl commands as the most watched show each year.

For instance Pespi says they have distributed 125 million 3-D glasses to watch their 3-D commercial on the Bowl this year, a record for people putting on silly glasses to watch a bloody advertisement. This is no blog, but forgive the comment, how can that many people be so stupid? Put on glasses to watch an ad? It better be good, it’s for a DreamWorks commercial on a monster movie in conjunction with the Pepsico folk on promo.

But what we really want to see is celebrities like Christian Slater, sans the stunt people, knocked on their rear ends by real NFL players. I personally know and greatly like Slater, but would pay good money to see him turned arse over teacup by a true linebacker.

What: Over 25 sports icons and celebrities will compete in an old school grudge match game of flag football the Saturday before Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Florida. The entire event is free to the public and no tickets are required. The first 1,000 fans through the gate have a chance to win one pair of tickets to Sunday’s big game in Tampa.

Airing on DIRECTV’s The 101 Network and simulcast on WGN America, the DIRECTV Celebrity Beach Bowl is a star-studded event that has quickly established itself as the must-attend event of Super Bowl weekend.

Who: Playing in the game are: Blake Lively, Chace Crawford and Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl), Christian Slater (Lies & Illusions), Kevin Dillon (Entourage), Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters),Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), Brody Jenner and Frankie Delgado (The Hills, Bromance), Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian (Keeping up with the Kardashians), Playboy Playmates Jayde Nicole (2008 Playmate of the Year) and Pilar Lastra, Benji and Joel Madden (Good Charlotte), Stacy Keibler (Dancing with the Stars), Geoff Stults (October Road), Brandon Molale (Dodgeball), Kasey Kahne (NASCAR) and NFL greats Jamal Anderson, Eddie George, Merril Hoge and John Kidd.

Reggie Bush (New Orleans Saints) will coach Team NFL Sunday Ticket with quarterback Steve Young while Eli Manning (New York Giants) will coach Team Superfan with quarterback Warren Moon. Maurice Jones-Drew (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Matt Forte (Chicago Bears) will officiate the game. LL Cool J will perform a live set after the game to add to the fun!

I live in Tampa and drove an hour with my family to see this celebrity football game. We couldn’t hear anything the announcers were saying. I don’t even know who was playing, couldn’t see or hear them. It was terrible. I felt so used. It was a free event and I thought they were doing something nice for people, but they were just using us to make it look good for the TV audience. They completely ignored the fans in the stands. People starting getting up to leave. It was just awful.

The Direct TV Celebrity Beach Bowl was unfortunately a very poorly run, disorganized mess that obviously was only staged for the TV audience. The spectators were merely non-paid extras to give the illusion of a crowded house of cheering fans. In reality, nothing was done for the fans in attendance. The “celebrities” were not annouced to the spectators…there was no audio to identify anyone on the field or making plays… and the crowd didn’t get to hear any of the interviews. There was no interaction after the game by the “celebrities” with the crowd, no autograph opportunities, nothing!! Many of the fans left before halftime. The best part of the whole experience was LLCoolJ… and I hate rap!!!

Actually, one of the football players did sign autographs during the “halftime.” I couldn’t tell you who he was because I couldn’t make out the player announcements. There was a play-by-play, but again, the sound was not very good. I just enjoyed the game and came home to search the web to figure out who I had just seen play. I would have been nice for the names to be on the jerseys instead of Reebok. I was surprised that there weren’t more autographs given considering that there was so much down time. Somewhere, there should have been a roster with jersey numbers to follow the action more closely. I agree, it would have been nice to be privy to the media frenzy that went on in the white tent for hours before kickoff. In a great gesture, Reggie Bush engaged the crowd tossing a football and included a young fan at one point. The other celebrities talked among themselves and Blake Lively took photos with unspecified people who were on the field. The loudest cheers came when the Stadium cheering team came out to shoot T-shirts to the crowd. Not the greatest event, but since I wasn’t expecting to see anyone in particular besides Eli Manning, it wasn’t too bad.

It’s true that the celebs were not announced, but get over it!!

It was a FREE event. We drove over from Tampa and had a great time.

Ok I didnt even know about the game I was ther for the concert but was there from the beginning of everything. durning the game .. the best part was the fan running on the field making a sand angel, him getting the flags from the ref’s and the players/celebs jumping on securtiy to get them off the guy, they we so laid back and even high fived the guy ( the celebs)
