Sundance bows with Eco theme By Chase Masterson SUNDANCE (Hollywood Today) 1/17/09 — Never have so many eco films been shown at the Sundance Film Festival, and last night’s event drew celebs and filmmakers alike together for one massive celebration. “2009: A Green Odyssey” beamed in to The Village on Main, kicking off this year’s festival with a tent nearly the size of an entire city block and libations flowing, courtesy of Stella Artois. The event was also held to honor “Big River Man,” a film documenting what is being called ‘the world’s longest swim” by Martin Strel down the Amazon. Strel, who holds several titles in the Guinness Book of World Records, was in attendance and seen celebrating the premiere with Sundance Programmer Trevor Groth at the event, which was packed to capacity after the standing-room-only premiere. Live bands continued til the wee hours, interrupted only by belly-dancers and a trip of hot bands, including Beats Antique from Oakland, CA. The winners of the 2008 Speak Green Contest, presented by the Redford Center, are also on hand in Park City, introducing voices of color to the eco-buzz. Ranging from 13 to 25 years old, they have performed and spoken across the country at events such as the Green Festival in San Francisco and Greenbuild in Boston. “Brave New Voices Speak Green” will be held Thursday, January 22 at the Music Café on Main and Friday, January 23 at the Michael Berry Gallery in Salt Lake City. Environmentally conscious brands, eco-treatments and organic cuisine are being offered at The Green Lodge, which runs from January 16-18 on Main Street. Paul Mitchell, a forerunner in the cruelty-free, nature-based beauty movement, is offering hair styling and makeovers, and Eco Limo caters to the environmentally conscious elite, providing fuel efficient and alternative fuel luxury transportation. Tours are being given to both media and celebs, many of whom are also taking advantage of the Green Spa, a center for wellness for both attendees and the planet. Green activities and a record number of eco-films continue at Sundance through January 25.
