Rosie O'Donnell doesn't regret doing "Rosie Live," despite poor reviews and cancellation

Wednesday debut plagued by negative critical response and low ratings

By Matthew B. Zeidman

NEW YORK (Hollywood Today) 11/30/08 – It was supposed to be Rosie O’Donnell’s crowning achievement following several months of bad press, but a crush of unkind reviews and a thin audience ensured the cancellation of “Rosie Live,” the comedian’s new variety show that premiered Wednesday on NBC.

O’Donnell announced the program’s discontinuation on her official blog Friday, acknowledging the chilly reception, but adding it was “still a thrill” for her to perform. Approximately five million peopled tuned in the night before Thanksgiving, according to Nielsen Media Research, a paltry amount for a midweek primetime broadcast on a major network.

Though “Rosie Live” boasted several celebrity guests, including Alec Baldwin, Liza Minnelli and Alanis Morissette, it was plagued by unabashed sponsorship plugs that would make even The CW’s “90210” blush, as well as poorly timed skits and awkwardly placed dance and acrobatic acts. O’Donnell’s attempts at self-deprecating humor also fell flat, as did NBC’s blatantly inserted cross-promotions.

During most of her career, the 46-year-old O’Donnell has maintained a generally favorable image in the media, having hosted an Emmy-winning talk show from 1996 to 2002, championed gay rights (O’Donnell and her partner have several children together) and supported several charities. However, a public feud with real estate magnate Donald Trump and difficulties with her co-hosts during her time on ABC’s “The View” have generated negative headlines since 2006.

Because of her big fat mouth – it’s her CAREER that went down in flames, not just this particular feeble attempt. NBC is on it’s way out too.

I love Rosie. This format does not work for her. I want to see her do her daytime show again or something edgy, like her own version of the view. Love you, rosie

Mr. Donald Trump said it well, “Rosie is a big LOSER” and now “you’re fired!”

I’m so glad to hear that show tanked. Her fifteen minutes were over long ago and the public is tired of her mouth. Please, Rosie, if you can’t fade gracefully into obscurity, just fade.

It was too hard to watch….actually it was painful. I lasted 5 mins.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Rosie is a talent impaired self agrandizing boar. How such a mean spirited and hateful person attained the attention and airtime she has been afforded over the years is beyond me. Her voice is not one that deserves to be heard.

I’m amazed that Rosie O” would dig up a corpse that was fondly known as “The Variety Show” and mutilate it. Sad.

No man(or Woman) can wear one
face to himself and another to the
    multitude without finally getting
bewildered as to which may be true

Rosie is bewildered. She should call it a day.

Thank God!!! She makes me want to hurl everytime she opens her pie hole!!! Besides, it’s sickening enough having another gay crusader spewing their crap in our faces on the TV all the time. Now, if only Ellen DeGenerous would get cancelled things would be better!

    The fat lady has sung…

  • 16 roke'r // Dec 1, 2008 at 8:07 am

Perhaps she should learn to tame her tounge. Nothing against the gay community, i actually enjoy the Ellen show. But this whale of a heffalump needs to just go away. The sight of her sickens me, and then when she opens her mouth, you can tell she thinks she is God’s gift to someone. Glad to hear it was cancelled. A smart move on the networks part

NBC should be shut down for even considering putting that disgusting pig into the homes of decent Americans, send her to China where she can enjoy her idiotic socialist ways. Why is this pig still breathing my air?

    Unwatchable bunch of loosers.
For a variety show to succeed; you need a talened host with talented guests and writers.
    This was painful.

Rosie needs to go home now and shut her loud mouth. The people have spoken

  • 23 Greg // Dec 6, 2008 at 10:15 am

Hey, so shew blew it. Yes, she is a loudmouth, but so are many, many very popular people. I do NOT Rosie, but I am fat, too, so can we lay off her weight? Most Americans are overweight. The show bombed because conservatives like variety shows, and she failed to follow the format of the 70s that worked – good fun family stuff. She lost me when she hailed Obama in her monologue.

Rosie looked the best she has looked in years, however this show was so nonprofessional. Did noone review this prior to putting it on prime time? Absolutely nothing worked, it was as if no rehearsal had takin place and normally funny stars were NOT FUNNY! A complete train wreck.

I am sorry to see this show
failed. She is a really talented singer and dancer.
Not to mention what a pretty
    lady she is.

  • 28 Ace Kelly // Jan 29, 2009 at 8:19 am

OMG. Do you people see what you are saying. This is pure hatred. Have any of you ever went out on a limb? Failed at something? Created anything AT ALL! This is pure hatred talk and what have you done that is making people judge you on a national level. NOTHING! She has and you HAVE NOT. So sit back and judge others who are doing someting while you live in your little pathetic judgemental world of nothingness.

  • 29 Ace Kelly // Jan 29, 2009 at 8:20 am

    WOW…that felt good.

  • 30 Greg // Feb 6, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Ace, really… I understand the hatred she attracts. Most of it being that she is part of the crowd that actually says America, conservative America that is, is evil. She spews hatred out to anyone that will hear and she wonders why some people hate her. Um, we are hateful and dellusional… give me a break. Also, I will admit that I don’t like her, but as an american I have the right to my own opinion just like her.
