MCCOMB, Miss. (Hollywood Today) 11/10/08 – According to a recent study, 6 percent of children younger than three suffer from food allergies—a severe and often lifelong affliction—and now Britney Spears’ youngest son can be counted among them.
Jayden James, 2, was hospitalized Sunday at the Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, where, according to his mother’s official Web site, doctors determined “he had a reaction to something he ingested.”
People magazine reported that hives, itchiness and irritability were among the child’s symptoms and that they were diagnosed as an allergic reaction. It was unclear if medical personnel were able to establish what food or foods Jayden James was allergic to.
The young boy was discharged from the hospital Monday, according to BritneySpears.com, and had recovered. Reuters reported that he and his 3-year-old brother, Sean Preston, were in bordering Louisiana to spend time with Spears, whose ex-husband, Kevin Federline, has full custody of the siblings.
Spears’ sister, Jamie Lynn, gave birth to her first child in June at the same facility that Jayden James was treated in. Both sisters also attended school at different points in their life at nearby Parklane Academy. McComb, Miss., which contains both the hospital and school, is about 24 miles from Kentwood, La., where Spears grew up, owns property and is registered to vote.
Food allergies are powerful immunological responses to the proteins found in certain foods that are harmless to those without the allergies. Unlike environmental sensitivities, which can be treated with medicine and controlled exposure, those with food allergies must strictly avoid contact with the offending foods. The most common foods to cause allergic reactions in children are milk, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts.
