HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 9/23/08 - - “I did stay in character,” Anne Hathaway told Hollywood Today. The venerable actress in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ Hathaway, 25, takes the lead role in ‘Rachel Getting Married’ and scores an Oscar winning performance as the troubled sister “Kym.”
The film encompasses love for family, heartache and sorrow at a time when happiness should be the dominate theme of the movie when older sister “Rachel” gets married. At the onset of the first scene, Oscar winning director Jonathan Demme starts the emotional roller coaster ride with Kym that only the veteran director could bring out in an actor.
“Kym… she was a complex character so once I clued into her… I never wanted to leave,” said Hathaway. The character Hathaway plays is her most complex role and one in which she becomes totally immersed in as an actor. Kym is not the most likable character in the film and yet Hathaway brings out the passion in her that makes you want to root for her at times and then toss her aside at times.
Kym is a neurotic mess of ups and downs and the genius of Jonathan Demme is obvious in ‘Rachel Getting Married.’ The award winning director of ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ and director of ‘Philadelphia,’ Demme brings out the full scope of Kym through Hathaway who has quickly risen to the ranks of Hollywood’s A-list. “To find a director that trusts actors is pretty rare. His trust in us as actors inspired us to trust him,” said Hathaway.
The film follows closely to the original script by Jenny Lumet, yet Demme’s connection with the cast in the film allowed them to freely develop their own style and follow Demme’s direction at the same time.
“She’s there… she’s brilliantly and beautifully drawn as a character. I feel that I really locked into her,” said Hathaway.
Kym is a wreck as a person that wants so much to be a part of everyday normal life, especially with her own family. “Kym’s got a lot of demons but she’s also got a lot of angels so not every minute was full of demons,” said Hathaway.
To see Hathaway’s best acting performance in this lead role, you’ll have to wait until October 3rd.
