‘Gossip Girl,’ ‘Juno,’ the Jonas Brothers among the night’s big winners

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 8/4/08 – Clearly, it isn’t just the elementary school set that idolizes Miley Cyrus. The “Hannah Montana” star took home the choice TV Actress Comedy and Choice Music Female awards Sunday night at the taping of the 10th annual Teen Choice Awards, the Associated Press reported. The Disney sitcom that launched her to mega-stardom also won Choice TV Show Comedy.
But why?
Cyrus’ red-hot colleagues, the Jonas Brothers, put their Disney chum’s total awards to shame, claiming Choice Music Single (“When You Look Me in the Eyes”), Choice Breakout Group, Choice Music Love Song (“When You Look Me in the Eyes”), Choice Summer Song (“Burnin’ Up”), Choice Male Hottie and Choice Red Carpet Fashion Icon Male.
“Juno” star Ellen Page got her belated dues in spades, winning Choice Movie Actress Comedy and Choice Movie Breakout Female. The extraordinarily popular and high-grossing 2007 indie film about a pregnant teenager marching to the beat of her own drum took the Choice Movie Comedy category.
“Gossip Girl,” the CW teen drama infamous for its explicit source material and promotions, but lacking in traditional TV viewership, made a splash, bringing home the bacon with Choice TV Show Drama and Choice TV Breakout Show. Its stars weren’t lacking in acknowledgement by the young voters, either, who named headliner Blake Lively Choice TV Actress Drama and Choice TV Breakout Star Female, co-star Chace Crawford Choice TV Breakout Star Male and portrayer of evil Ed Westwick Choice TV Villain.
Musician Chris Brown had a good night, as well, winning five awards, one of which he shared with Jordin Sparks and another with Lil Mama and T-Pain, while actor Will Smith was lauded for two of his recent works: “I Am Legend” and “Hancock.”
Other honorees included “High School Musical” star and avid spokeswoman Vanessa Hudgens (Choice Female Hottie), “Heroes’” Hayden Panettiere (Choice TV Actress Action Adventure) and “The Eye’s” Jessica Alba (Choice Movie Actress Horror/Thriller). Brand new ABC Family series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” was named Choice Summer TV Show, while the Steve Carrell/Anne Hathaway spy romp “Get Smart” was recognized as Choice Summer Movie Comedy.
The Teen Choice Awards ceremony will air on Fox at 8:00 p.m. EDT/PDT tonight. According to the network, approximately 30 million votes were cast via its Web site. Though voters were supposed to be between 13 and 19 years of age, there was no way to determine how many younger or older fans cast their ballots or how many voted multiple times “American Idol” style.
