Christian Bale discusses his role and the challenge of reinventing the series

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 7/1/08 – Arguably the most highly anticipated film of the season, “The Dark Knight” is only days away from release, and Batman, himself, Christian Bale, sat down with Hollywood Today to discuss what made this installment unique from the previous five.
“I see there as being great potential for reinvention and revitalization of the mythology of it,” the Welsh-born actor explained. “And that’s what I’m aiming to do. That’s what I feel like our responsibility is. Otherwise, there is no point in making it.”
One key difference that has been the chief point of anticipation these past few months has been late thespian Heath Ledger’s gritty and chaotic interpretation of Batman’s best known nemesis, the Joker, who was portrayed with unapologetic giddiness by Cesar Romero in the 1960s television series and a dry wit by Jack Nicholson on the big screen in 1989.
“We never wanted to have caricatures,” Bale made clear. “We never wanted to have the actor kind of peaking through and winking at the audience…Heath was wonderful with that. He completely immersed himself. He stayed under. When he was the Joker, he was the Joker throughout—absolute commitment to that.”
“He portrayed him in a way that has not been portrayed before,” Bale continued. “He had this kind of anarchic, punk, “Clockwork Orange” approach to it. Heath did such a damn good job, if [director] Chris [Nolan] decides to make a third movie, he said himself, [it’s] a real challenge how to up the ante with any villain after Heath’s Joker.”
“I think that this second movie has surpassed the first,” Bale contended. “It stands as a great movie, regardless of genre.”
