Academy Awards limits song nominations – two per film
By Brian Frederick

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 6/20/08 – - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted on Tuesday to limit the maximum number of songs nominated for a film in the original song category. Only two songs can be nominated for next year’s 81st Academy Awards. Previously the maximum number was three.
The move is in step with preventing any single movie from dominating the original song category.
In the previous two years, ‘Dreamgirls’ and ‘Enchanted’ each received three song nominations respectively, however, neither movie won the original song category.
The Academy did not limit the number of songs that can be submitted for consideration in a film during the first phase of the member voting process. If a film has three or more songs considered for the second phase of voting, only the two songs with the most votes will be placed in the final group of five.
Another rule change the music branch approved was denying members from voting if their songs were eligible for consideration in the original song category. Any member who has a song(s) in contention for an Oscar may not participate in the voting process but may ballot for the final winner.
If a member is unable to attend the annual screening of eligible songs and clips, DVDs with ballots will be distributed to those members and must be returned by mail.
After the Oscar finalists are announced starting at 5:38 a.m. PST (13:38 UTC) on January 22 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, the final phase of ballots are mailed out to all participating members on January 28 and must be returned by 5:00 p.m. PST (1:00 Feb 18 UTC) on February 17.
“And the Oscar goes to” – just one. There are only two people who know who the eventual winners are for each Oscar category before they are read on live television to approximately 50 million American homes. The winner’s envelopes are protected under lock and key.
Winning an Oscar can earn millions for studios and individuals who walk away with the coveted statue of plated gold.
The Academy Awards will be telecast from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, February 22.
Post your vote on Hollywood Today between now and February 21, 2009 and tell us who you think will be the winner for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
