HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 6/20/08 — It’s back to the 60s this weekend with two new major releases taking their inspiration from that long gone period of tuxedo-ed spies and long-haired hippies.
Based on the TV series created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, Get Smart stars Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway in what looks to be a mirthless comedy spoof. That nice girl from Devil Wears Prada and Princess Diaries should be the main draw here, especially for teen girls and their boyfriends, while single boys would be there for Carell. A projected $35 million on 3,700 screens looks likely, with $12 mil on Friday.
Austin Flowers, or The Love Guru looks equally laff-free from its trailer, but though Mike Myers hasn’t been around too much of late to garner must-see attendance, over 30 year-old digital sophisticates (ex-hippies) could prove to be the main ticket-buyers here. Families will probably avoid it on the grounds of looking too risque, opting instead for the safe silliness of Get Smart. Expect $22 million for the weekend, $8M on Friday.
Watch Kung Fu Panda continue to wreak havoc in the top five with another $15 mil, Happening drop to $12M, and Hulk bring in $27 million. The other new release of the week, Brick Lane, depends on how much Americans find the plight of Asians in London’s East End a subject worthy of interest. Not much I would have thought, having grossed just under half a million in the UK.
