Gift suites, lux lounges and celeb fetes in palatial Hollywood homes, WEHO hotels and LA hotspots precede The MTV Movie Awards.

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 6/1/08 — The MTV Movie Awards are a fave amongst the celeb set, as it’s an award show that doesn’t take itself too seriously. But look beyond the tongue and cheek exterior as there are some serious blockbuster boys making carefully calculated moves. They are showing up for their big Hollywood close up as a media reminder to their young frat boy fan base to fill the many hot seats of summer.
Alongside The Boys of Summer, one can find the ladies that stand by their man in supporting, side kick or romantic roles or the few, the proud and the fierce females that kick some serious summer blockbuster booty. They do it Angel style, Devilishly as a Prada Princess, or as is the case in this year’s summer cult, in full tilt stiletto style with sex as their weapon.
Whatever the case, cast or characters, MTV Movie Awards Show always draws the big guns and the prettiest pistols. This year is no different with Jack Black at the helm as MC, Steve Carrel playing another dumb one with a dash of brilliance and your basic Ben in any and all things MTV or Paramount related Stiller, not to mention Adam blockbuster Sandler and Hollywood’s favorite success story of late, Iron Man Downey. All the boys will partake in the live award show and played a part in preparing short films to be seen during the night or as was the case with Sandler, before Sunday’s event.
Not on film, but on stage LiLo will be in the house, no doubt with her hip lady, as will Carrie Bradshaw’s SJP wearing yet another trend setting ensem. But before they strike that red carpet pose, several LA movers and shakers have been setting the scene with MTV Movie Award celebrity gifting suites; the pre awards show fetes filled with freebies, booze and plenty of poolside photo ops.
Here’s a peak at who showed up where and who got and what was hot.
A Flock of Segals
Malanie Segal’s 4th annual Hollywood Platinum Gifting Lounge was the first fete which kicked off the week on Thursday taking place in the heart of Hollywood at the soon to be realized W Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. The place was a buzz with vendors and guests.
Melanie always puts her money, mouth and energy where her heart is. This year’s event found it’s passion place with Brad Pitt’s Make it Right NOLA, which restores homes in New Orleans 9th Ward that were destroyed by Katrina and Rita with “green” low utility cost houses.
Melanie was raising funds and awareness at the event and building a house while attending to her celebs. Once in, celebs were asked to go online and pick out a piece of the house that they wanted to donate, be it light bulbs ($5 each), Paint ($25), thermostat ($100), lighting ($500, heating system ($5,000) and solar paneling ($25,000)
Segal plans to finish floor to ceiling, 1 of the 150 homes that Brad is committed to building. If you want to help Melanie complete her home or build your own, go to: www.makeitrightnola.org.
That was just the right spin to kick off the event. Once in, I caught Everybody Hates Chris’s Mom, Tichina Arnold, who is by far, one of the funniest female comedic actresses working in TV. The laid back actress, sans entourage was looking pretty in pink as she talked about being a single Mom. “My daughter is 4 going on 40.” Obviously the apple doesn’t fall far from the Diva tree.
There was an abundance of funny females in the house. The Office’s Kate Flannery was with her NBC photog BF Chris and was seen scooping up a hip Christy’s bolero hat while the hilarious comedian Judy Tenuta was loving on the Kipling bags as they were showcasing a new season of Fergie’s spring line for Kipling.
Model citizen Adrianne Curry was celebrating her wedding anniversary on that very day to the famous Mr. Brady himself, Christopher Knight. The stunning reality star and Playboy Playmate attributes the success of her marriage and good skin to not partying or hanging in Hollywood. “You’ll never see me at Hyde,” she said dryly while sipping Izze soda.
Every one was bonkers for the Sushi Dan sushi, which was insanely fresh and plated up as we walked in. Lots of fashion finds were on deck, from the clean and classic white K Swiss sneakers, Moonsus fashion forward computer bags for the ladies, Tag jeans sleek, sexy black stretch denim for summer, The Great China Walls statement making studded hoodies and T’s, Smoke & Mirrors fall preview of dresses & coats and the effortlessly sexy, Euro flowing dresses and oversized tops by Juliana Jabour.
Logitech provided tech toys and the crowd fave, an all in one clicker for those that want it all in a click, perfect for the celeb set.
Melanie Segal’s Lounge in celebration of the MTV Movie Awards took place this past Thursday May 29th and Friday May 30th. The lounge raised money and awareness for Brad Pitt’s Make it Right NOLA. It took place at The W Hollywood Residences Welcome Center, which is the only way to get a sneak peak of what the W will look like when it opens in 20
Guests included Joel Madden, Paul Oakenfold, Whitney Port, Kelis, Kathy Hilton, Lil Romeo, Tila Tequila, Kate Flannery and Creed Bratton (The Office), Ian Ziering, Shar Jackson, Kathy Hilton, Derek Hough (Shannon Elizabeth’s new fling from DWTS), Omarosa, Robert Buckley (Lipstick Jungle), Shaun Toub (Iron Man), Angus T Jones, Adrienne Curry, Drew Seeley (HSM), Romi Dames (Hannah Montana), Jai Rodriguez, Samantha Harris, James Kyson Lee (Heros), Rachel Leigh Cook, Andrew Keegan, Traci Bringham, Tamera Mowry, Cheryl Burke, Carter Jenkins, Joy Lauren, Cris Judd, Kelly Monaco, Shawna Sands Lamas, Camp Freddy, Beverly Mitchell, AnaLynne McCord (new 90210 series), Kevin Sorbo, Linda Thompson, Vincent Martella, Zoey 101 and Wizards of Waverly Place stars, and many more.
The Kress-ent Moon
On Friday we went to Gavin Kelly’s GBK Productions, which hosted a gift suite, celebrating nominees and presenters for this year’s awards at The Kress, a recently refurbished Asian inspired club and restaurant in Hollywood. Gavin too is notorious for always giving back before he gives away. Celebs received $20,000 in goodies, while 20 % of GBK’s proceeds were devoted to the Lamp Community, bringing light to the homeless living with mental illness.
There were a wide variety of goodies. In many suites you will see trends in the making. You Bar is a family run company where you play a part in the making of your own health bars by choosing your ingredients. The Global Healing Center gave out a trio of internal and external health with Oxy Powder, oxygen in a capsule, Aqua Spirit mist and Parfait Visage, food for the face, an organic skin cream like water on a plant and immediately absorbed.
On the flip and fun side was Cream by Crystal mini cheesecakes that were so good you want to slap somebody and Insomnia cookies, a late night cookie delivery service, like pizza but they’re sweet and sweeping college campuses.
For beauty buffs, Revitalash was there dishing it out, keeping Hollywood lashes long and healthy, while Twinkle kept the red out and Dr. Catrise Austin offered $5,000 worth of dentistry to celebs. For fashion, Rough Roses, the founders of the line Linea Pelle, father & daughter were in house as was the was her new baby donning a red tie tie on his five week old neck, showing you’re never too young to work a look.
Their new line has the same cutting edge belts and rich buttery leather bags. FP jeans shorts and skirts were summer sexy. Gen Lux’s George Blodwell was very excited about the denim while both sides of the gender fence slipped in to the Kiwi brand Canterbury of New Zealand’s rugby’s, the official purveyor of New Zealand’s rugby, and the Canadian fave Icerok necklaces, which has all the UK DJ’S spinning with a little ice to keep things in fashion check and cool on deck. Love their key and Spartan necklace.
Mattel’s Batman, The Dark Knight was a good send off for kids, while healthy adults gravitated towards Tribest Life baby blenders. Entourage’s Rex Lee, every one’s favorite agent’s assistant was walking in, as I walked out.
Springtime in Paris
Nathalie Dubois’s DPA Gift Lounge at Fekai on Rodeo was an urban elixir. After fighting Friday traffic to get there, a massage by Massage Express was excellent. The practitioner’s touch was wildly relaxing, even through a dress and with boots on. She said. “It’s event better without clothes on.” I’ll have to take her word.
A few of Nathalie’s standards were there, Fekai of course, always introducing a new and exceptional product. Salon Glaze, a clear shine finish was just the ticket creating shine and a soft touch. Arizona’s own Canyon Ranch launched a skin care line. The Age Transforming serum is rich enough to double as moisturizer and their mist is perfect for the plane while Sphatika has an excellent skin care and cleanse and a great travel size kit, fit for today’s security.
For summer there were international offers from Aussie make up line Lucy B, LA’s own L Space swimsuits, Blu Horse sweatshirts, French designed jewelry Mon Bijou, great statement making piece where profits benefit The Center for Orphan Street Kids and finally Damrak, a Dutch gin with sweet floral notes. It preceded London Gin, perfect for cocktails and pairing. Lookout vodka!
The Hollywood Secret
The Secret Room closed off the events on Saturday as they took over the rooftop pool of The Valadon, a boutique Hotel in WEHO. There was a mix of retro celebs from ex 90210’s Jason Priestly who was Canadian cool and refreshingly friendly and another 90210-cast mate, Kristine Elise was lovely. On the opposite side of the retro Coast, New Yorker Debbie Gibson was rocking the Bejeweled T’s and hats. She’s so tall!
The suite started with the Milwaukee man, Paul Vaughn of Kwof had the wickedest flat iron, and one specifically made for curling the straightened hair. Health was in top form with the many alternatives from the Vitamin Shoppe, Greens & Chia being a big hit. Yoga Toes owner had me giggling and my toes wiggling.
Chipotle was soaking up the sun serving fresh healthy alternatives on site and offering one-year gift cards. If that wasn’t enough health, The Enchanting Group was showcasing their hotel group in Mexico complete with healing modalities; a healer on site and some resorts where candles are your only light.
Blue tooth headsets, Norton Antivirus and Pulse Smart Pen, which records audio and plays it back at the tap of a pen and allows you to download notes in to your computer had all the writers drooling poolside.
As I waited for my car outside and continued to chat with my new Beverly Hills buddy, Jason Priestly who coined himself, “Normal,” I was pleased at how pleasant all the suites were. They were more scaled back than in previous months and years, more of a party than a tradeshow where the focus was on good food, good fun and good folks.
For the record, Priestly is so not normal. He’s super cute!
