Cannes poker tourney brings out big names and thrilling $500, 000 finish
By Cassandra Gava

CANNES, FR (Hollywood Today) 5/22/08 — One of the highlight events at Cannes each year is the Charity Poker Game organized by the Partouche Group, owners of the Palm Beach Casino in Cannes, and this year was no disappointment, with top stars and big drama.
Celebrities were chosen according to their affinity for poker, Texas Hold Em Poker to be exact, and their
dedication to a particular charity. The lineup consisted of six American actors–Edward Norton, Adrien
Brody, Tim Robbins, Woody Harrelson, Dennis Hopper, Goldie Hawn—a Mexican American, Salma Hayek, and French actress Alice Taglioni. Some of them prepared for the game with special coaches. Each was playing feverishly for the prize money—a $500,000 donation to the charity of their choice.
The event started with a rollicking cocktail party at the VIP Lounge with monitors established around the room to observe the game. Some of us ventured into the Super VIP section of the Casino restaurant where a huge screen displayed the various emotions, including tension in each of the player’s faces as the game progressed.
It was more fun watching the game which ran for over two hours over wine and a delicious meal. The group gathered there cheered and applauded loudly every time a player exited the game and entered the room to drink, eat, and be consoled by friends.
The actors were interviewed before the game about their various charities. Woody Harrelson spoke of “Oasis”, an environmental group, Adrien Brody about “For The Good” which benefits a particularly poor area of NY, and Tim Robbins showed his dedication to the “Actors’ Gang, the theatre group that he founded years ago.
In the end, the prize was split between Woody Harrelson and Alice Taglioni, the French actress who is apparently quite the poker player and could probably take up the game professionally.
The event was a great smash and even the rain did not prevent crowds gathering outside the Palm Beach Casino where the tournament was broadcast live.
