Ellen Page Reverses Roles for “Smart People”

Media darling Page plays uptight smart-mouth in star-studded film

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 3/31/08 – Just as it seemed Ellen Page fever had run its course, the “Juno” superstar is getting ready to endear herself to theater audiences all over again with a supporting role in next month’s ensemble piece, “Smart People.”

Appearing alongside Hollywood staples Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church, Page has put a spin on her last performance, trading in orange-striped T-shirts and blue jeans for stockings and knit sweaters. Her character will still be tough, outspoken and in high school, but unlike the laid-back hipster the 21-year-old brought to life in her last film, Page’s character, Vanessa, will be the quintessential conservative, who will be forced to re-examine her relationship with her historically distant father (Quaid) throughout the course of the film.

While Vanessa is decidedly different from Juno, Page’s truly stark departure from her media-imposed pigeon hole may be lurking around the next corner. She is set to star in “Jack and Diane,” in which she will play a teenage lesbian who has disturbing dreams about transforming into a lycanthrope after she becomes enamored with another woman. Ironically, her paramour in the unconventionally plotted film will be Olivia Thirlby, her supportive best friend from none other than “Juno.”
