Directors Guild of America also fete Clayton and Diving Bell
By Jeffrey Jolson

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 1/8/08 — The Directors Guild of America Award nominations were announced today with kudos going out to gritty, independent films, at least in spirit if not in distribution. Paul Thomas Anderson is included for his take on a complex and greedy oil baron in “There Will Be Blood,” Sean Penn for his outdoor drama “Into the Wild” and the Coen Brothers for their gritty serial killer film “No Country for Old Men.”
Noms also went out to Julian Schnabel for his sub-titled P.O.V. story from the perspective of a paraplegic “Diving Bell and Butterfly” and Tony Gilroy for the legal drama “Michael Clayton.”
Other supposed Oscar frontrunners like “Juno” and “Atonement” received no nominations from the DGA, which is usually a keen Oscar predictor — at least in the Best Director category which translates into Best Picture more often than not. You don’t have to win the DGA Award to get best picture, but you generally have to be a nominee just because the voting bodies overlap. And if 376 directors voting in the Academy don’t think your picture is even in the top five, you’ve got a serious uphill battle for even a Best Picture nom, much less the win. History shows four out of five of the DGA movies will be Best Film nominees in the Oscars, according to Awards Daily.
As such it does not bode well for “3:10 to Yuma,” “Hairspray,” or “American Gangster,” all left out by the DGA though nominated for best ensemble cast by the Screen Actors Guild, which has the largest body of Oscar voters, about 1,240. “Blood” and “Juno” did not get SAG ensemble noms. “Blood,” with the DGA honor and steady stream of critical kudos, still looks to have cemented an Oscar best picture nom. “Juno” broke through at the box office this past weekend, and beyond the Guild politics, nothing succeeds like success so the underdog film has a chance of a BP nom — though a win without a DGA nom is more than a longshot.
The next two days will tell, as the Writers and Editors Guilds chime in with their nominees, meaning nearly half the Academy voting bodies will have tipped their hands.

Awesome info! I was honestly just thinking about something similar to this the other day so, it was almost “weird” when I ran across this. You would be surprised how many people simply have no idea when it comes to this kind of stuff. Anyway, thanks for getting this info out there and I’m sure I’m not the only one who appreciates you taking the time to post this for the masses.
