Moving nearly 700K copies of his self-titled debut apparently was not enough to keep the label happy with Hicks.

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 1/8/08 – After winning the fifth season of “American Idol,” Taylor Hicks probably expected his life would change, making way for a successful music career. However, it looks as though he is moving in the opposite direction.
J Records, which signs each season’s winner to a lucrative record deal, apparently dropped Hicks from the label.
While the Sony-BMG owned company revealed little, a spokesperson did confirm Hicks will be flying solo on his upcoming effort. “Taylor is going to record on his own for the next album,” said label publicist Liz Morentin.
Known for his prematurely salt and pepper grey hair, Hicks’ soulful voice has yet to help him transform into a household name, a perk typically associated with the eventual “Idol” champion.
Rather, the biggest star from that fifth season has been fourth place runner-up Chris Daughtry. Alongside his self-titled band, Daughtry has made claim on a slew of accolades in the past year, with a handful of big wins at the American Music Awards. They are also nominated in four Grammy categories, including Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album.

You all seem to take some perverse pleasure in anything at all negative about Taylor Hicks. I don’t understand the recored company, although anyone can sing(?), yell and scream in most of these bands like Daughtry. Taylor has his own unique style (which has been VERY popular with the tens of thousands of people attending his concert. I was lucky enough to go to 3 concerts-eveyone different and better. Do yourself a favor and go to one of his concerts-you’ll see a man who wont’t change to suit some thickheaded boss, but rather, a talented young man who sticks with what he believes in. Dale
