HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 8/30/07 — Funny man Will Ferrell, on-screen NASCAR driver, was the first of a number of celebrities to be given the keys to the new BMW Hydrogen 7. According to the BMW website the car is the first mass-produced vehicle to be powered by hydrogen.
When running in hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but water vapor according to BMW. Take that DiCaprio! Have fun in your gas guzzling Prius.
Besides Farrell (“Talledega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby”), other celebrities reportedly interested in the car include Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Sharon Stone and Davis Guggenheim, director of “An Inconvenient Truth.”
Only 100 have been made, though that allows BMW to call it a “production model” rather than a prototype or concept car. The Bavarian Motor Works will be offering a limited number of these clean cars to high profile owners in the United States though they are currently not yet for sale. Between the company’s publicity campaign and Hollywood’s environmental leadership, it should be a match made in heaven. Science and car bloggers have been having a heyday with the news.
“In the long term, only hydrogen fuel, won from renewable sources such as sun, wind, water and biomass, can provide a reduction in total CO2 emissions and meet our energy needs in a sustainable way” says BMW.
