HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 8/26/07 — Raunchy teen fest “Superbad” got more McLovin’ this weekend, adding another estimated $18 million-plus to the Judd Apatow and Seth Rogan film’s take of $69 million. This feat was accomplished even while their “Knocked Up” is still in a few theaters and grew to a $148 million gross.
The film is on target to become the second highest-grossing R-rated film of 2007, behind “300.”
Newcomers in the Top 10 included Brit comedy “Mr. Bean’s Holiday” which took in a fairly festive $10.1 million to score the No. 4 slot. Watch for this one to have legs. Slapstick comedian Rowan Atkinson’s tour de France has already made $189 million overseas and the first “Bean” did $45 million in the US.
The Jet Li-Jason Stratham movie “WAR” came in No. 5 with an estimated gross of $10 million. With Jet Li as an assassin and Stratham as an FBI man out to get him, the action film scored well with young males.
Scoring better with the ladies was “The Nanny Diaries,” with BAFTA Best Actress Scarlett Johansson (“Lost in Translation”) as an au pair who struggles to please her uptight employer played by Oscar nominee Laura Linney (“The Squid and the Whale”). The film came in at No. 6 with an estimated $7.8 million.

Coming in at No. 2 and 3 respectively were holdovers “The Bourne Ultimatum” with Matt Damon and “Rush Hour 3” with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. With $12.3 million this past weekend, “Bourne” has now earned $185 million in the U.S. while “Rush Hour” took in another $11.5 million and is speeding past $108 million.
Two limited-release films Hollywood Today liked didn’t quite catch on the masses. “Resurrecting the Champ” with Samuel L. Jackson and Josh Hartnett earned about $1.8 million and John Singleton-produced gangster film “Illegal Tender” did an estimated $1.4 million.
Finally, polar bear film “An Arctic Tale” that we’ve been tracking because Starbucks Coffee chain gave it a full court promotional push, stayed ice cold at the theaters. It earned a chilly $16,000 for a cumulative gross of about $550,000, showing that no amount of java can keep viewers awake through a weak movie.
