HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today/AFP) If you doubted capitalism and Western culture found its way back into Vietnam after communists took the reins, police were called in to control an unruly crowd of Vietnamese Harry Potter fans who were jostling for free tickets for a showing of the boy wizard’s new movie, a cinema employee said Friday.
Thousands of fans mobbed a cinema ticket counter in downtown Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday which had offered 500 free tickets for an advance screening of “Harry Porter and the Order of the Phoenix” next Friday, August 31.
“Thousands of people queued from 5am to try to get one of the 500 free tickets,” said Tran Dang Ngoc My of the Thien Ngan Galaxy cinema. “The situation was really chaotic. Police had to intervene to maintain order.”
The cinema soon decided to give away another 500 tickets for a second daytime screening next Friday before the movie officially premieres that night.
After the 1,000th ticket was handed out, police had to disperse the other disappointed fans, local media reported. There were no injuries or arrests.
